Samsung Note 20 Ultra Review: Close to Perfection!

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Samsung just released their new flagship phone the Note 20 Ultra which is spectacular and beyond what we expected. I must say that the difference gap between the S20 Ultra and the Note20 Ultra is very huge. We expected slight upgrades in the Note 20 Ultra but Samsung just stepped up way above everyone else.

Samsung Note 20 Ultra Exterior: Ultra Premium

The new Note 20 Ultra comes with supreme exterior design. This just might be one of the best exterior designs in the market. The back of the phone is colourful, grippy and fingerprint resistant. They also have a high-class camera module with an enormous camera bump. It comes in three colour variants: Mystic Bronze, Mystic Green and Mystic Black. Unlike the S20 Ultra, the cameras here look pretty well defined and look like they have a purpose. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra measures 164.80 x 77.20 x 8.10mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 208.00 grams. Even after being so premium, it is still slick and light.

The phone comes with a 6.90-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440x3200 pixels at a pixel density of 508 pixels per inch (PPI) and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. The maximum refresh rate on this phone is 120Hz. Also, the Note 20 Ultra is the first phone to come with the Gorilla Glass 7 screen protection and features an IP68 rating for dust and water protection. It comes with a Type-C port for charging but no headphone jack. And just like all the other Note phones, this one too comes with sharp edges corners, unlike the S series which have soft and rounded corners. Now for some people, the sharp corners might become a problem and take some time to adjust to it but other than that the phone design is fabulous.

Samsung Note 20 Ultra Interior: The Flagship!

The new Note 20 Ultra comes with the Qualcomm octa-core Snapdragon 865+/Exynos 990 featuring 4 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and 4 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It comes with 12GB RAM and 4500mAh non-removable battery. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports wireless charging, as well as proprietary fast charging. It also features 256GB expandable storage ( up to 1TB) with UFS 3.1 storage system and runs on the Android 10 of course. As for the sensors, it packs In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, Gyroscope and Barometer. The special feature on this phone is, of course, the S pen. The upgraded is S pen is so better than the previous ones. The latency has reduced from 42 ms to just 9 ms which the same as the Apple Pen.

Samsung Note 20 Ultra Performance: Top Class!

With such a top-tier spec sheet you can expect the Note 20 Ultra to give you extreme and smooth performance. Be it daily life applications or heavy games, the note 20 Ultra will not disappoint you. The 240Hz touch sampling rate and the 120 Hz refresh rate takes your mobile experience to another level. The battery is pretty great and lasts a full day with just a single charge. The software on the phone is pretty good. It comes with 2.5 One UI. The haptics makes the UI much better. It also comes with a lot of bloatware that you will probably never use. The hidden feature of the Note 20 Ultra is the Adaptive Refresh Rate. This feature changes the refresh rate of the phone according to the requirements of the application that is running. While in other parts of the world the Note 20 Ultra comes with the Qualcomm octa-core Snapdragon 865+, the Note 20 Ultra in India or U.K. comes with the Exynos 990 processor. The Exynos 990 is 10% slower than the Snapdragon 865+ which is a huge gap. The Exynos 990 is also not great for longer battery life. Keeping aside the differences of the Snapdragon 865+ and Exynos 990, the phone performance overall is fantastic.

Samsung Note 20 Ultra Camera: A great upgrade!

As far as the cameras are concerned, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on the rear packs a 108-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a pixel size of 0.8-micron; a second 12-megapixel camera with an f/3.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.0-micron and a third 12-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a pixel size of 1.4-micron. For better Auto Focusing, Samsung replaced the Depth Sensors with the Laser Auto Focus module which has faster and snappier auto-focusing. The maximum zoom for the telephoto lens has dropped down to 50x zoom. You can now record videos at 8K for around 24 FPS and 1080p videos at 120 FPS. I think the cameras had a great upgrade in the hardware as well as software from that of the S20 Ultra. The images have far better colour accuracy and are a lot sharper than before. The 10 MP selfie camera comes with pretty good image processing and focusing. The cameras overall are very good and experienced an exceptional upgrade.

Samsung Note 20 Ultra Conclusion

The Samsung Note 20 Ultra is a premium flagship. The hardware, performance, software and camera are exceptional. There are very few bugs and can be hardly noticed. The Samsung Note 20 Ultra is good for daily use and occasional gaming. This phone gives you a high-end performance but if you want something for gaming check out my review on the Asus ROG 3.
